United Kingdom’s Parliament: Most Diverse In History


UK, 13th June 2017 | Kirtika Katira: The UK’s parliament election 2017 came as a surprise due to its diversity. 2017 Elections have surely given its parliament the most diverse set of MPs. Many black and minority ethnic MPs made into the parliament than ever before. In 650 member Parliament, 208 are women. 45% of Labour MPs are women. With these stats, UK has become one of the countries that have higher no. of women in parliament. The percentage has certainly increased from 29% to 32% of new women MPs from 2015 to 2017 respectively. Four black women secured their seats as MPs, which is a great step for the hugely under presented group in Parliament. Fifteen Muslim MPs are elected to parliament, out of which 7 are women.


  • 43 LGBTs in the parliament – most in history till now.
  • 51 ethnic minority MPs elected like Asians, Blacks etc in 2017, which has increased from 41 in 2015.
  • 5 MPs with disabilities have been elected to the house.


12 MPs from India

Labour’s Preet Gill has become the first ever Sikh woman MP in UK.

While Tanmanjeet Singh is now the first turban-wearing Sikh to be a part of parliament.

The polls have resulted in the most diverse parliament in the history of UK.
